Oprah Winfrey on Belief
While she professes to be a Christian Oprah Winfrey has been challenging basic theology for quite some time. Years ago on her show she challenged the idea that Jesus was the only way to heaven. Over the years her beliefs have continued to stray greatly from true Christianity and her latest teaching of Eckhart Tolley's book “A New Earth” has really exposed just how heretical those teachings are. In one of her sessions she shares the core of this new teaching, the fact that God is a feeling experience, not a believing one. Here is a quote of her explaining what Tolley believes about God.
“God in the essence of all consciousness isn't something to believe, God is, God is. And God is a feeling experience not a believing experience... And if your religion is a believing experience, if God for you is still about a belief it is not truly God.”
To say that if your relationship with God is based upon belief then you do not know the true God is to say that not only is the Bible in error but so was Jesus. Let us look to the Scriptures at the importance of belief according to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We will start with one of the most popular and basic passages of all of true Christianity, John 3:16 and following.
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
God sent his Son into the world because he loves us but our salvation still requires us to believe in His Son. Whoever believes will have eternal life, but those who do not are already condemned because they do not believe. This is the way to salvation. The good news is that Jesus came, died and rose again but unless we believe in Him we will not be saved. As we are told in Romans we are justified when we believe in our heart.
Rom 10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.
Without belief there is no justification. Those who do not believe are condemned to hell yet Oprah willingly shares this teaching and has the audacity to say that if your experience is based upon belief it is not truly God. By what authority does she make such a claim? Christians should be warned to stay far away from such heresy and they should discourage their non-Christian friends from it as well. This teaching is discouraging people from doing the one thing that must be done to receive salvation: believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Acts 16:31 ..."Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved...”
We can say without a doubt that if your faith is a believing experience then you will be saved, but if it is not then you are already condemned. I encourage you to believe on the one who has the authority to speak for our Heavenly Father and therefore explain who God truly is.
John 6:46 No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father . 47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
His authority came from the Father and the truth is that he who believes has everlasting life. Belief is a must. We will end with several other quotes from Jesus on the importance of believing in Him. These are simply a few of the many verses that tell the same story, one must believe to be saved.
John 5:24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
John 6:29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."
John 6:40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."
John 6:47 I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.
John 8:24 I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am [the one I claim to be], you will indeed die in your sins."
John 10:25 "I did tell you, but you do not believe . The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
John 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.
John 20:29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed ; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed ."
